Mary Ann Mazur
January 03, 1919 - November 29, 2007
Mary A. Mazur (nee Mraz), age 88 passed away at Pope John Paul II Rehabilitation Center in Danbury, CT on Thursday, November 29, 2007. Born in Homestead, Pennsylvania on January 3, 1919, she was predeceased in January, 2001 by her beloved husband of 62 years, Andrew J. (Andy) Mazur. Mary's parents moved the United States in the early 1900s where the three oldest Mraz children were born; the Mraz family then moved back to Czechoslovakia and Mary resided there until her marriage to Andy in 1938 in Povlovce, Czechoslovakia. Mary attended schools in Czechoslovakia. All three of those Mraz children moved back to the United States to live the American dream.
Mary and Andy settled in Brooklyn, NY until their fourth daughter was born when they moved to Danbury, Connecticut. After her children were grown, Mary worked in the kitchen at the former Danbury Teacher's College (now WestConn) as well as Eastern States Foods where she worked in the kitchen at the former Perkin-Elmer. Mary retired in the 1980s from her position at Perkin-Elmer but then cooked for the priests at Saint Gregory the Great Church, specifically, Monsignor John Wigh.
Mary enjoyed cooking, specifically nourishing her family with her home-made specialties, gardening, traveling, watching the Lawrence Welk Show and spending time with her family and friends and specifically, her grandsons. She was a past member of Saint Gregory Ladies Guild, Germantown Ladies' Auxiliary and the Slovak Jednota. Mary and Andy were proud charter parishioners of Saint Gregory the Great Church and in their younger years volunteered their services for the Church whenever they could.
Mary was devoted to her Roman Catholic faith until Alzheimer's set in. Mary had a stroke in October of 1995 which left her without speech.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Anna (nee Yuhas) and her brothers: Michael of Linden, NJ and John of Burgettstown, PA, Andrew and Joseph and her sister, Ann all of Czechoslovakia. Mary is survived by a sister, Elizabeth of Czechoslovakia and sister-in-law, Margaret of Burgettstown, PA and several nieces and nephews.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Mary E. Vostinar of Dumont, NJ, Helen A. Woodward and son-in-law, Dwight F. of Wausau, WI; Ann L. Morits and son-in-law, Randall J. of Tomahawk, WI and her daughter, Irene Mazur of Dover Plains, NY and three grandsons: Andrew M. Woodward (wife, Katie); Matthew Woodward (wife, Amy); all of Wisconsin and Kevin Vostinar (wife, Janet) of Henderson, Nevada as well as three great grandchildren: Christopher Dylan Vostinar and Nicole Christine Vostinar and Andrew Joe Woodward.
