Obituary of Shirleyann Cardinal

Shirleyann Cardinal May 16, 1927 - July 09, 2009 Shirleyann Cardinal, 82, passed away peacefully on July 9th at Pope John Paul Nursing & Rehab Center in Danbury, after a valiant fight with cancer. A longtime Danbury area resident, Shirleyann was born May 16, 1927, in Medford, MA, to the late Eudore and Emma (Priestas) Cardinal. She attended St. Xavier Academy in Providence, RI and Lesley Teachers College in Cambridge, MA. She taught at Southbury Training School, and also in one of the first classes for mentally handicapped children in Bridgeport. Before retiring, she worked as a waitress, caterer, and a child care provider to many children in Fairfield County. She enjoyed traveling, playing poker, bingo, Scrabble and bridge, doing word search and jigsaw puzzles, and being with her family. Besides her daughter, Deborah (Slais) Brown and her husband, Todd of Danbury, she is survived by her granddaughter, Jen Brown and her husband, Bob Waibel of New Milford; her grandsons, Todd Brown and his wife, Tammy of Bethel, and Scott Brown of New Milford; four great grandchildren, Alexis Brown of New Milford, Dawson, Kobe and Mason Brown of Bethel. She is also survived by her two sisters, Estelle Denault and her husband, Louis of Davenport, FL, and Claudette Nunes of Middletown, RI; and her special friends, JoAnn Hodgman and Jane Leware. Her family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the staff of 2 South at Pope John Paul for making her happy and comfortable in her final days; in particular to Kathy, Maria, Philomena, Charlotte, Edgar, and Judy; as well as Hospice workers, Astrid and Maria. Funeral Information The family will receive friends at the Cornell Memorial Home, 247 White Street, Danbury, on Monday, July 13th between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00pm. Burial will be private. Donations Information In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to the American Cancer Society or to the Victory Junction Gang Camp.
