Obituary of Sr. Mary Alphonsine Gugger, SSND
Sister Mary Alphonsine Gugger, a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, died on June 16, 2018, at Lourdes Health Care Center, in Wilton, at age 98. Maria Clara Gugger was born on May 9, 1920, in Widnau, Gallen, Switzerland, the daughter of Joseph Gugger and Aloisa Frei.
After pronouncing her vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1949, she began teaching at St. Ambrose School in Baltimore, Maryland. She also taught at Catholic schools at St. Vincent’s Orphanage in Tacony, Pennsylvania; St Boniface, Philadelphia; and St. John, Bergenfield, N.J. She remained at St. John until 2002, when she retired to Villa Notre Dame in Wilton.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. Nieces were with her at the time of her death, as were members of her SSND community.
Friends may call at Villa Notre Dame, 345 Belden Hill Road, in Wilton, on Wednesday, June 20, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, with a Christian wake service at 6:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 21, in the chapel at Villa Notre Dame. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Bethel.
