Dear Grey Family,
You may not remember me, but back in the 90s (my high school days), I used to jam on bass with Kitoh every weekend at Robbie's Music. I may have mostly known Dr. Grey as "my drummer buddy's dad" and he knew me as "his son's bass playing friend" but I'll never forget his presence and our all-too-brief conversations about jazz and music in general. Truly a fantastic person. I offer my most heartfelt condolences.
One memory that sticks in my mind is this: My family was hosting a renowned tabla player and his accompanying musicians for a "house concert." The first person we wanted to invite was Dr. Grey and your family. My mom was adamant telling me, "Kitoh's dad needs to be here for this." I'll never forget seeing how intensely into the music he was and his incredible graciousness. I'm super glad my family and I got to share our musical traditions with him. My biggest regret is that I never got to see him play.
I'm pretty gutted to hear about Dr. Grey's passing. Having lost my own dad back in 2015, I can only imagine how gutted all of you are. I may not have known Dr. Grey as extensively as I'd have liked to (again, he was mostly "my buddy's dad") but I am very fortunate that I did know him during his journey and witness a sliver of his greatness.
My heartfelt condolences,
Neal Chandran

DeSayles home town of South Williamsport, PA, lost a hometown hero. DeSayles is remembered by his classmates and the friends that he made while growing up here. They remember him playing Boogie-Woogie on the piano in the high school gym with great fondness. His family had a long history in Williamsport as activists and educators. Mary Sieminski, Williamsport, PA.

Dear Maurene, I especially enjoyed hearing about De Sayles musical adventures. Some men are larger than life when we hear their stories and De Sayles was certainly one of those men.
I pray for you and your family, for your burden and heartache to be eased, in God's love and blessings.
your friend, Ellie Douglas Parzuchowski

I first met De Sayles when Maurene and I worked together and decided to learn Transcendental Meditation. This was when they were living in Pittsburgh and he was teaching at the University of Pittsburgh. Although, when they moved to NYC area and I moved to Bradford, PA we had children and different lives, we always kept in touch and would occasionally visit.
I wish I was closer, Maurene, so I could do more, but know that my heart is with all of you. I know De Sayles was cared for and loved during the last difficult years, and you will miss him.
Jai Guru Dev and Namaste.

To the family: My father Mr. Oscar S. Fisher and Mrs. Anna Grey were board members of the Bethune-Douglas Community Center in Williamsport . They were Both members of the NAACP as well. Both were civil right activist. I remember DeSayles playing instruments extremely well. My older brothers Rich and George were closer to his age. I remember living in NYC and playing jazz. My youngest daughter Kelli graduated from FAMU in the early 2000. DeSayles played in the high school band with Bobby Stills who later lived and preformed in NYC. We pray that GOD will bless you all. We are thankful that the Grey family share their life with us. The Fisher family. Cordially, Dr. Harold E. Fisher Piscataway, New Jersey and Oneonta, NY
