Obituary of William D. Sturges
New Fairfield – Mr. William D. “Bill” Sturges, age 89, of New Fairfield, died Wednesday February 19, 2020 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Lorraine (Straiton) Sturges.
Bill was born August 22, 1930 in Danbury son of the late Aaron Burr and Olive (Bush) Sturges. Bill was a graduate of Abbott Tech and began his career as a carpenter while still attending there, assembling and delivering boats for Sears. Then it was off to the Army where he had many different assignments including garbage man, chauffeur, cook and bugler. His most memorable moment was his deployment to Iceland where he worked with the Army Corps of Engineers building Quonset huts to house a regiment of Army soldiers. He had many fond memories and photos as head carpenter.
After leaving the Army he started a family with his wife Lorraine. Bill continued in the carpentry field building many new homes and projects such as the Dutch Village at the Danbury Fair. He later became a Union Carpenter for Local 210 in Danbury until his retirement.
Bill is survived by his children: William A. Sturges and his wife Angelina of Bridgewater, Michael P. Sturges of Danbury and Shari Lamanna and her husband Mark of New Fairfield, his grandchildren: Kristen Lamanna Kaiser and her husband Sameer, Jeffrey Lamanna, Jay Lamanna, Aaron Sturges and Nikki Desalliers and McKayla Sturges and his great granddaughter: Emma Kaiser.
Mr. Sturges’ family will receive relatives and friends at the Cornell Memorial Home 247 White Street Danbury on Friday February 21, 2020 from 4 to 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Edward the Confessor Church in New Fairfield on Saturday February 21, 2020 at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in New Fairfield.
