My condolences to the family of Dr Godward. He and I were colleagues at WCSU’s Department of Social Sciences for all of my 33 years there. I considered him to be a fine gentleman. He had told me that his harrowing experiences in bombing missions over Germany in the last year of the European Theater of WW II had a major impact on how he wished to live the rest of his life. He definitely has my respect for a life well lived.

I know a lot of our students loved working with Tom, especially those going into teaching. I miss hearing him whistle while walking down the hallways at WCSU. He will be missed.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I had the great pleasure of working with Tom in his last few years before his retirement . He loved and was so proud of his students, and led the faculty at graduation each year with palpable pride. He will be missed.
Warmest Regards,

Tom was a dear colleague and friend. For many years he taught a required course for the social work program in which I taught. He was always supportive to our department and most of all an incredible teacher to our students. My favorite memory is of seeing Tom meet a student in the hallway and addressing the student as Senator.
Please accept my sincere condolences.

Dear Godward Family,
May I offer my condolences. I have fond memories of working with Tom for many years at WCSU. Whenever anyone questioned the quality of teacher education, Tom would demand "empirical evidence" and that ended the challenge. He supported his students and rejoiced in their successes as secondary teachers.

I was fortunate to have Dr. Godward as a professor at WCSU in the late 1970's. His love and passion for education was so clearly evident in everything that he taught. He would refer to the students as "senator" and "congressman" in his class lectures, as he was expertly trying to create an atmosphere similar to what would occur in debates on the House or Senate floor. He was kind, generous and understanding. He was one of those professors who instilled in some of us the desire to become teachers ourselves, and he was, in part, one of the reasons why I became a university professor at WCSU. His wit and candor, as well as his infectious laugh, will never be forgotten. It was such an honor for me to meet him after I was first hired at WCSU in 1985 as an adjunct professor. He was genuinely pleased and urged me to pursue teaching full-time at WCSU, which occurred in 1994. When he heard that I was hired full-time, he called me to congratulate me, saying he was proud of his students who "made it to the top". Thank you, Tom, for your leadership and for your love of education and students, and for all those who you inspired to follow you in this wonderful profession.
Now, YOU have made it to the top......

My sincere condolences to the Godward family. As Chairman of the Social Studies Department at Danbury High School, in the early 1970's, I had the opportunity to work with Tom, first as a mentor to some of his student-teachers when I was teaching and later in helping assign and supervise students he placed in our school. We had a great working relationship over the years. He was always a gentleman, with a ready smile, and easy disposition that made it a pleasure for me to work with over the years before I left that position in 1978 to take another position at DHS. He impacted the lives of so many that while he's no longer here, his legacy will live on not only with the family but with the extended "family" that he created by moving so many young educators into their careers. He will be missed.
