I was sadden to hear Mr.Hammer had passed away, especially during covid. He certainly deserved a huge celebration of life and thanks for all the children and people he helped throughout the years. I'm now 37 years old and I had Mr.Hammer as my third grade teacher and then 4th grade teacher... he moved up with me the next year..(I think it was 3rd and 4th grade) He was by far my favorite teacher I ever had and I still have the card he gave me before I moved from Staley rough school system to outta state that will provide me with one free ice cream cone at his restaurant. He was one of the very few teachers I had that actually cared and did what he could for me. He would let me either sit in the library or his classroom instead of recess so I wouldn't have to deal with other children picking on me. He made me feel heard and made me feel like I mattered when I didn't think very highly of myself. He even once took my side when my own mother tried to say she didn't sign my report card but she did yet she went to Mr hammer and told him I forged her signature. He believed me in the end and just appeased her till she dropped the issue. He knew I came from a very abusive and poverty stricken home life and he always made my days better and taught me things I still think about to this day. I'll never forget him calling us students his nails and he was the hammer. To this day he's still my favorite teacher and I wish I had the chance to tell him all this before he passed on. I hope he is resting well and found some great card companions where ever he may be. God bless.

Mr. Hammer was my 6th Grade teacher. I remember him fondly, as we shared similar last names. One of my greatest joys though was becoming a teacher myself, and chatting with him in the Teacher’s Faculty Lounge as a colleague. I like to think I taught the same way he taught me, that academics are important, but being a positive and productive member of society was equally important.

So sorry to hear of John’s passing. I began teaching at Stadley Rough School in 1992 and John was always friendly and willing to help. I lived in Aunt Hack and occasionally would hitch a ride to work. A few months ago, he messaged me on FB to reconnect. It was nice to hear from him! I’m so sorry I never had the chance to get a group of STR teachers together for coffee.
May he rest in peace and may your family find comfort in many happy memories.
