Obituary of Mary Virginia Schroeder
Mary V. Schroeder, age 89, formerly of New Milford, died Tuesday August 11 at Regional Hospice after a long illness.
Mary was born July 12, 1931 in New York City to the late Carl and Lillian (Hannon) March. She was a graduate of the Good Shepherd School in New York City. Mary started dancing at a young age in NYC and continued to dance and tap away over the years bringing joy to all who watched.
Mary met her late husband Robert (Bob) in NYC and they began their life together in 1954. They moved to New Milford in 1962 with 3 children in tow and added 2 more upon arrival. Mary was a very active mother and neighbor in her Sunny Valley community and volunteered at St. Francis School just to drive her children nuts with embarrassment! She was well known for her wacky sense of humor, wit, charm, and wry personality and carried these gifts until the end. Although Mary worked at Nestles in New Milford for some years, volunteering was her life.
Mary was widowed in 1985. Following Bob’s death she became involved with New Milford Visiting Nurse and Hospice and volunteered there for more than 30 years. Her compassion and empathy for others was felt by countless hospice patients over the years and her passion for Hospice never waned.
Mary will be lovingly missed by her five children, William (Kay) Schroeder of Corpus Christi, TX, Catherine (Scott) Halkett of Patterson, NY, Joanne Cronin of Plainville, CT, Donna Duris of Sandy Hook, CT and Robert (Melanie) Schroeder of Frisco, TX. She was blessed with ten grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) Schroeder, Christine (Jose) Fuentes, Steven Cronin, Alex Halkett, Alexandra Duris, Meghan Schroeder, Matthew Cronin, Robert Schroeder, Kyle Halkett and Marissa Halkett and three beautiful great-grandchildren, Alejandro, Nicole and Logan Fuentes. She is also survived by her nephew Robert March and nieces Nicole and Rita March, and Tori Schroeder.
Due to the coronavirus crisis, all services will be private and there are no calling hours. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a future date.
