I am profoundly sorry for this loss. Doug and I worked together at the Brookfield Police Department mostly on the midnight shift and he was my Sergeant for many years. Doug and I worked very well together. I admired Doug for his decisiveness on police calls for service, but also for his advice in personal matters. Doug was a fantastic listener and leader. I shall miss the good conversations we had, but will cherish the memories. Doug had one heck of a sense of humor and his laugh was infectious especially when he couldn't stop laughing. It was something to experience. He was very knowledgeable in both american, and world history especially in the subjects of warfare. We would often discuss the Civil war and ww2 when the occasion came about. When our young daughter was hospitalized and had to undergo life saving surgery some years ago, Doug was the first to contact our home to ask if he could help out in any way. Doug would then call regularly to get updates of our daughters progress. That was Doug. Upon my return to work there stood Doug with a waiting toy for my daughter and some baked delights from Gita for our family. It was an honor to share adventures on the road together brother. Love and Prayers to you and family.

I worked with Doug at the Brookfield PD back in the 80s and 90s. He was a great police officer and an even better man. He was a mentor and friend not only for my police work but for my life. My thoughts and prayers go out to Gitta and the family during this tough time. Doug will be dearly missed by everyone. He touched so many with funny stories and clear guidance. Rest in Peace Doug, and thank you for everything you did for me. Bruce Scott

From my years as a state trooper or from the many golf tournaments I’ve run, it was always a pleasure seeing Doug. He was a good friend, and an even better police officer. He will be missed by so many of us. My best to the Vane family during this difficult time. RIP, my friend. Major Peter Warren, CSP (Ret.)
