Jerry was elected First Selectman of Brookfield, CT in 2003 during a period of widespread acrimony and he calmed the waters in short order. Jerry was a former naval officer—commanding five ships during his 31-year career. Yet, in spite of his military background and training, Jerry governed without a hint of authoritarianism. The secret to Jerry's success was the fact that he was comfortable in his own skin. He knew who he was, where he was going, and what he wanted to accomplish for the Town and its residents. His calm and confident leadership style resulted in effective governance. Joni Park & I had the honor of serving with Jerry on the Board of Selectmen. He was a great colleague and friend and I will miss him greatly. My sincere condolences to Susan and their three children and families. Godspeed, Captain Murphy.

I was probate judge in Brookfield from 2001 - 2011, during the time when Jerry was serving as first selectman. My office was right across from his at town hall. He always had time for me whenever I dropped in to catch up with him. He always provided me whatever help I sought from him. He was truly a gracious man. MaryAlice and I offer deepest condolences to Susan and family. Joseph and MaryAlice Secola, Canton, TX.

As Jerry’s college Sigma Nu roommate and a long time friend, when he lived in Pelham, I can remember that Jerry’s nickname “onions” was because he loved hamburgers with onions and as his Mom said that was all he wanted to eat growing up. I can attest to that from the many years of knowing him.
Fondly,
John
