Obituary of Mildred Claire Hammonds
Mildred "Millie" Claire Hammonds, a woman who never met a stranger, died peacefully on October 22nd in Trumbull, CT. She was 77.
Millie was an outgoing Irish-Catholic redhead from the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a city she loved. She married the late Bobby Hammonds, a quiet Southern Baptist and member of the Lumbee Tribe, in 1962.
The couple lived for many years in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, and retired to Bobby's hometown, Lumberton, NC, in 2002. Friends predicted the lifelong New Yorker wouldn't last a year down south but true to form, Millie cultivated a cadre of loyal friends who helped her feel at home in state for 16 years.
Millie loved to quilt, knit and crochet, and made beautiful blankets, tablecloths and highly-coveted socks. She seemed to subsist on a diet of bagels, coffee, chicken parmigiana and Fig Newtons.
Millie is survived by her daughters Teresa Kavanagh and Carolyn Hammonds; sons-in-law Brian Kavanagh and Terrence Day; surrogate daughter, Michelle Amoroso; her nine grandchildren Anastasia and Matthew Kavanagh; Lila, Finnian, Calder and Maeve Day; Gerard, Melissa and Nicole Cebulski; three great grandchildren Grayson, Bobby and Callie; devoted brother Gerald Good of Flushing, NY; and sister, Helen "Mickey" Smith of Springhills, FL.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Connecticut - Hudson Valley Region or the American Lung Association
