I was saddened to read of Mr Ayers passing. had the pleasure of having him as my teacher while a student at Broadview. These years were difficult for me at home, my mom ill and my sister and I taking on her care in addition to keeping up our grades. Mr Ayers was kind and understanding and on days when I felt I'd barely make it through, he was supportive and let me know he was there to talk if I wanted.
As the years pass, we often forget those who make an impact on our lives, especially teachers who had such imperative places in our growth. Your husband, father and grandfather helped this lost pre-teen move on to bigger and better things. As my English teacher, he taught me to love the subject and in turn, I majored in writing in college (he'd be thrilled to know I can actually spell...).
Please know he has made a difference in my life and I've thought of him over the years. Sending my sincere condolences to your family.

I was so surprised and saddened to hear about Rusty´s sudden transition, my deepest condolences to you, Ruth, Family Members, and Friends. My appreciation and remembrance of Rusty will always be at the top of the list as one of the finest male figures that I have ever known, right beside his father, (also Rufus) my stepdad, who I grew to love and appreciate. Rusty was a person that I always admired and aspired to be more like, a standard that would be difficult for anyone to achieve. Rusty cared about people, was funny with a great sense of humor, a great role model, hardworking, and so much more, I loved that he was a drummer, a very good drummer. I will always remember Rusty as a positive person who always shined his light very brightly out to the people, and the world is a better place because of who he was. Rusty will surely be missed by the many who knew him and loved him. A new adventure begins, I believe, even though we leave our bodies behind, that we are so much more than our physical bodies. We take our consciousness, experiences, memories, and our evolvement with us and continue. Think of it as the caterpillar, the caterpillar does not die, it does not end, it transitions into a beautiful butterfly and a new experience begins. Rusty, enjoy your new adventure, thanks for being a role model earlier in my life, many will miss you, but I truly believe that we will know you again when we ourselves make the transition.

Our sincerest sympathy goes out to Ruth as well as to Rusty’s entire family. We were sad to hear about Rusty. He was a lot of fun and a very interesting person. We first met Rusty when he would bring is Uncle Bud to Angelo’s for pizza on Friday afternoon. We had been meeting Bud for years and when Bud was unable to drive, Rusty started bringing him and it was a great pleasure and highlight of the week to meet Bud and Rusty for lunch. We have no doubt that Rusty, as well as Bud will be truly missed. Although nothing can fill the loss, please take comfort in knowing, that Rusty was a wonderful person who made the world a better place to live in. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of great sadness and loss

Dear Ruth,
How quickly life changes. Losing Rusty without warning still shocks me. I can't imagine how you are coping. He was always so vigorous, strong, adventurous, caring, funny, and empathetic. He was a wonderful force of nature and so much a part of this wonderful planet we call home. You both were so good for each other. It was a wonder to watch you together working, playing, entertaining, just being. I'll never forget all the times he stopped by the rehab center with yogurt for me when I wasn't sure I'd make it out of there--in out, a smile and encouragement. Or the times I found him weight lifting in his classroom at lunch break when I was delivering or picking up equipment with "I gotta keep in shape for Ruth!" You built a beautiful life together. Please accept my condolences. He will always have your back. Andy

As a student of his I thought I could write pretty well. He was a tough critic, however and didn’t let me get by with that kind of thinking. He surely made me a better writer. He taught me that my humor wasn’t enough. That what I needed was cleverness. And that it would take a lot longer to learn but the journey would be worth it. Oh yeah, and he’s probably the reason I became a teacher. I bet a lot of us can agree on that.

When Rusty was in elementary school, and lived on Flanders Road in Woodbury with his parents and sister, we lived just down the road. Rusty and his sister, and my bother and myself were all good friends. We would walk to each others houses, and spent a lot of time together. He and I were in the same grade in school. I have many fond memories of Rusty and his sister. My sympathy to Rusty's family . Gloria Aquilar Faraci

So sorry for your loss. We remember when our boys were teenagers and getting into miner trouble. Rusty called a meeting of all the parents and asked us to come together to prevent further issues. That took a lot of strength and love, to be concerned for them all. We lost touch over the years but reading the tributes it seems he carried on his compassion. Carol and Ed Cox.

Ruth -
We are so blessed to have been able to share our joint grandsons' milestones with you and Rusty over the years. We were looking forward to doing that again, post-COVID, and will miss him when we do. My enduring memory of Rusty will be his getting on the floor to play with the boys in their early years, gently guiding, always teaching, and sharing in their fun. They too were blessed to have had him in their lives.

Ruth,
Rusty was the best neighbor we could ever ask for.
Kind, caring, helpful, warm, thoughtful, funny. A very special person.
Hard to realize we've known him and you for over 25 years.
Ruth - you had one of the "good ones" - one of the best - they're rare.
Bill and I are so extremely sorry for your loss (and the loss for all who knew and loved him).
Sending hugs and lots of love to you and the family.
Sending good energy and saying prayers for him.
Love,
Patricia & Bill

What can I say? Barbara and I offer our heartfelt condolences to all the members of Rusty’s family. Having been fortunate to have made it well into my 80’s, I have lost a number of friends and family but the loss of Rusty so tragically sudden hit me as hard as any loss I’ve endured. It’s right up there with my immediate family members – he was that close.
We were colleagues and friends for over 40 years. We were Sandy Hook Diner breakfast buddies for at least 20. We had a reasonably regular schedule.
As a teacher and a coach, he displayed a concern for his students and players that was legendary. He was the Snicker King, after every game. He cared very much for each one the kids and helped many of them when they ran into bumps in their journey through adolescent lives. He had a wicked sense of humor. He saw joy in his life and shared his zest for life and adventures with his friends and family and most of all with his partner in life, Ruth. He volunteered in soup kitchens and food banks to help those who need that help. He gave so much of himself to others. He will be missed and never forgotten by those of us whose lives he touched. Rest in Peace, my friend.
