Today we gather together to celebrate the wonderful life of Nancy Ellen Cacy Fiddner – a dedicated mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend and nurse who can also be called an Angel of Mercy. She was called home in her sleep way too soon but is now reunited with her beloved son Austin, cherished mother and father, and fun-loving nephew Kevin.
Nancy graduated from Nonnewaug High School in Woodbury and Danbury’s Western Connecticut State University. She then attended Guilford College in Greensboro North Carolina where she received her degree in nursing.
She loved travelling to the far corners of the earth with friends and family. Her visits to Disney World with John and Austin and later with sister Barbara were always special. She treasured summer memories on the beaches of New Hampshire and Maine. And never forget her love for the New York Yankees and New York Football Giants.
She leaves behind her loving husband John from Danbury, sister Barbara Cacy Kinney from Wilmington North Carolina, brother Tom Cacy from San Antonio TX, numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and a covey of friends and colleagues,
It is said that time heals the wounds that we suffer in this long journey of life on earth. Somewhat true for the healing is never truly complete. And time will never erase from our minds the legacy of memories Nancy leaves in our minds, especially when those memories are something we cherish and yearn for more.
You all know we cannot fathom the impact that Nancy had on each of our lives. She had such a positive , affectionate influence on us all. And not just those of us who gather in remembrance – but to the untold number of individuals whom Nancy touched as a nurse for the last few decades. She even met her husband John because of her nursing duties while caring for John’s Grandmother.
Author Christine Bell once wrote, “Nurses are there when the last breath is taken, and nurses are there when the first breath is taken. Although it is more enjoyable to celebrate the birth, it is just as important to comfort in death.” That’s what Nancy was all about.
Scripture passages can inspire nurses in moving forward in times like this - in continuously caring for other people and in sharing our passion to serve others as we go. As a nurse, keeping your spiritual faith firm and strong is very important as you take care of people every day.
Deuteronomy 15:11: “For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore, I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’”
Hebrews 6:10: “For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints.”
God has given to us all a blessed verse to meditate upon in times like this: Matthew 5:4 – “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”
Thank you Nancy for being exactly who you were designed to be.

Dear Tom, Barbara and families.
I’m so sorry for loss of your baby sister and my good friend, Nancy. We spend many years together when I moved to Woodbury. I have so many wonderful memories of trips and just hanging out at the house with Nancy and your Mom and Dad. Many wonderful miles spent traveling thru Woodbury in the convertible Camero. She honored your Mom by becoming a nurse and carrying on with her legacy of caring for others and now it’s hers as well. Nancy always had a smile and a good word to say. She is the only one to give me the nickname “O”. For Owens. She was loved and will be missed by all that knew her in her life. She is now smiling and enjoying being with Austin, and your Mom and Dad again.
God Bless,
Tara Owens

I shouldn't be surprised that I grieve more for a friend than I did for a recently deceased relative. The old saying "you pick your friends, relatives are thrust on you" holds true. Friends are special people in our eyes because we hold them to be. Friends fill time in our lives that is vacant when they die. To quote John Cassian "The bond between friends cannot be broken by chance; no interval of time or space can destroy it. Not even death itself can part true friendships."
