Mere words cannot express how sad our family is on Sonny's passing.
A legend? Yes. An Icon. Yes. A good and decent man? Yes.
I became friends with Sonny 30 years ago when we moved to New Milford. Our paths originally crossed on a baseball field. We shared a passion for the game of baseball and that passion created a lasting friendship that transcended our love of baseball. We coached together for several years. First, with The New Milford Green Machine Travel Team....Sonny will say (and I will agree) that group of boys (who are now grown men) was the best baseball team that New Milford has ever produced. We then coached The New Milford Express which won the first ever CT State Championship that New Milford ever experienced, and then won the first ever Babe Ruth Baseball State Championship ever for New Milford.
Then, with our great friend, Paul Iverson founded the New Milford American Legion Baseball program, which produced many more great teams (well, I correct myself...this was the best team ever in New Milford). My reason for mentioning this is that it was with Sonny's dedication and guidance that these 3 teams solidified New Milford's place in baseball in Connecticut and New England which will forever be entrenched. It was his leadership that created so many other great teams that followed. Sonny's efforts were recognized with a place in The Connecticut Babe Ruth Baseball Hall of Fame.
Sonny and I shared a connection that is hard to describe. On the baseball field, it was like we could read each other's minds. Sure, we didn't always agree, but when a decision was made, we always lived with it and never looked back. Our compatibility off the field was something that doesn't happen too many times in one's lifetime. No matter how long it was between conversations, we always picked up right where we left off.
He was a wonderful man. He was like family. My wife, Laura, our sons Alex and Jackson, our daughter Ariana and her husband Zach were all important to Sonny. He coached Alex, Jackson, and Zach and they learned so much more than baseball from Sonny. Ariana knew Sonny as well and as the sister (and eventual wife) of baseball players, was aware of the incredible impact Sonny had on all of us. Laura and Sonny had a great friendship that was also more than a baseball connection. Again, a bond and a connection that is still treasured by all of us.
As I write this, I realize that it was baseball that brought us all together. But Sonny was so much more than a baseball man. God created Edwin "Sonny" Shaw for a greater good and when God was satisfied with Sonny's impact here on earth, it was time for Sonny to join him. Sonny's job was done here. He did what God wanted him to do. Although we all might not agree, it was time for Sonny to join his creator to do even more from his new vantage point. We will miss him. But his positive presence will always be felt by the thousands of lives that he touched.
Love you, Sonny. You did so much more for all of us, than you ever imagined.

My dear Uncle Sonny, I am so proud to have been your Niece. You were always there to cheer all of us on to give us motivation when we didn’t think we could do something. My heart breaks and hurts so much. What I loved most about you was how you made all of us feel like we were your favorite Niece or Nephew but I was so blessed beyond measure to know how much you loved my granddaughter Lyliana,. She loved you so much and loved being your Great Great Niece and how you came to watch her Cheer being her very own Cheerleader. We love and miss you so much
Love Darlene Hislop

You were always the best. The best uncle a girl could have. The best uncle for my children to have. You were always present and let us know you were proud and loved us.never judged anything, and always supportive. You were our coach, our defense, and our offense.
We are truly devastated! We love you uncle Sonny!

Jeremy, Josh. We were saddened to hear of Sonny's passing. We know it is a difficult time, but you have so many memories that will give you comfort and yes, laughs, as you recall the many happy times. We were glad we could number Sonny as one of our friends and will remember his smile and humor, along with many great baseball memories we all shared.
